Kalanchoe — Каланхое (Kalanchoē).
Kalanchoe pinnata — Bryophyllum pinnatum.
Also popularly known as air plant, everlasting flower or Goethe plant, depending on the region.
Kalanchoe pinnata has been traditionally used for various inflammatory conditions. Experimental research has found that certain extracts from its leaves and flowers may have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-edematous effects.
🧴 An alternative: traditional external use
Because the safety of consuming Kalanchoe at home is not well established, it is preferable not to recommend tea or juice made from the plant.
If we consider its traditional use, it can be described as a plant applied externally in some folk remedies for localized discomfort and inflammation. However, studies that have found anti-inflammatory activity used extracts and controlled formulations, not simply a leaf placed on the skin.
🌱 What does the research say?
In animal studies, extracts of Kalanchoe pinnata reduced responses related to pain, inflammation, and edema. Flavonoids that may contribute to these effects have also been identified.
This is interesting from a scientific point of view, but it does not mean that a homemade preparation of Kalanchoe will have the same effect on a person.
⚠️ An important precaution
I do not recommend consuming Kalanchoe in the form of tea, juice, or homemade extract. Some species contain bufadienolides, compounds that can have cardiovascular effects and whose safety margin may be narrow.
It should also not be used to replace medications prescribed for arthritis, inflammation, or pain.
If there is significant swelling, intense pain, redness, heat in a joint, fever, or persistent inflammation, it is important to find the cause and consult a healthcare professional.
And remember: just because a plant shows anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory or animal studies does not automatically mean that it can treat a disease in people.
