Plant used:

Cloves — Γαρύφαλλο (Syzygium aromaticum). These are the dried flower buds of the clove tree. Their main aromatic compound is eugenol, which has been shown to have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in experimental research.

☕ Ingredients for 1 cup

3–4 whole cloves — Γαρύφαλλο

250 ml of water

Optional: a small amount of cinnamon to enhance the flavor.

🫖 Preparation

Boil the 250 ml of water.

Add the 3-4 cloves.

Cover and let it rest for 8–10 minutes.

Strain and drink the warm infusion.

🌱 What benefits can it provide?

The interest in cloves stems primarily from their eugenol content. Experimental research has found antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity, although these results do not automatically mean that drinking an infusion will produce the same effects in every person.

As a beverage, it can be occasionally included as part of a varied and healthy diet. However, it should not be presented as a treatment for prostate, bladder, diabetes, urinary tract infections, or other diseases, because there is currently insufficient clinical evidence to support such claims.

⚠️ A very important precaution

Don’t confuse clove tea with clove essential oil. The oil contains much higher concentrations of eugenol, and ingesting significant amounts can cause severe poisoning, including liver damage, neurological problems, and other potentially dangerous effects.

Caution is also advised for people taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, as eugenol can affect blood clotting. People with diabetes should also consult a healthcare professional before using medicinal amounts of cloves, due to potential effects on blood glucose levels.
