Turmeric: a traditional drink to accompany a healthy diet

Main ingredient:

Turmeric — Κουρκουμάς (Kourkoumás).

1 teaspoon of turmeric powder.

250 ml of milk or unsweetened plant-based drink.

A pinch of black pepper.

Cinnamon — Κανέλα (Kanéla), optional.

Honey — Μέλι (Méli), optional.

Turmeric contains curcumin, a plant compound that has been extensively studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the amount of curcumin absorbed when consuming turmeric as food is relatively low and it should not be considered a medication.

🥛 Preparation

Heat the 250 ml of milk or plant-based drink over low heat.

Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric — Κουρκουμάς (Kourkoumás).

Add a small pinch of black pepper.

You can add a little cinnamon — Κανέλα (Kanéla).

Mix for 2–3 minutes without letting it boil vigorously.

Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

If you wish, add a small amount of honey — Μέλι (Méli).

🌱 What benefits can it provide?

Curcumin has been investigated for its potential effects on processes related to inflammation and oxidative stress.

Some clinical studies have found modest potential benefits of curcumin preparations for certain joint discomforts, but the results depend on the formulation and dosage.

Therefore, it is not correct to claim that turmeric cures arthritis, reduces inflammation throughout the body, or replaces anti-inflammatory medications.

🦴 Can it help the joints?

Turmeric has been studied particularly in people with discomfort associated with osteoarthritis. Some results are promising, but there are still limitations in the evidence, and not all turmeric products have the same concentration or absorption.

As a beverage, it can be part of a varied diet, but it should not be presented as a treatment.

⚠️ An important precaution

The culinary use of turmeric is generally well tolerated, but high doses or concentrated curcumin supplements can cause digestive discomfort and may interact with some medications.

People with gallbladder problems, blood clotting disorders, or who take medication regularly should consult a healthcare professional before using concentrated curcumin supplements.

And remember: a spice can provide beneficial compounds, but there is no miracle drink capable of curing diseases.
